Lucy Turley was born in Snowflake, Arizona 30 June 1888. She was born in a one room log house. She worked hard as a child, helping weave carpets, tending babies, washing dishes. Her schooling was all in Snowflake. She graduated from High School. When the railroad was built from Williams to the Grand Canyon her father was in charge of construction so took his family to camp for the summer. It didn’t rain so water supply became low. Many had mountain fever, Lucy did and lost her hair but it came back in curly. She did not like to ride horses, but her father insisted she ride every day when they were living at Aripine. She clerked in Uncle Jim Flake’s store. Earned $20 a month. Paid her own room and board. She taught Sunday School and Primary classes while a young girl. Her first train ride was when she was 18 years. She went to Phoenix to the State Fair. Her first automobile ride was when she was 23 in Salt Lake City. She went in a sightseeing car around the city. Lucy’s mother died when she was twenty one. She took care of the twins who were four and did the cooking, washing etc. for the family of eight until her father married again when she was twenty three. Lucy worked in Primary, Mutual, Sunday School and Relief Society for many years. She was a faithful member of the church. Lucy was a gifted cook and fed many farm workers, family and school children. One favorite was her wonderful cinnamon rolls.
