Harriet was the daughter of Lewis Madden and Harriet (Knight) Carter. She died at age 108 and never married. Harriet was a graduate of Columbus North High School, the Ohio State University, and the University of Chicago. She enjoyed a distinguished career in Library Services and Administration, serving public libraries in Chicago, IL, Iron Mountain, MI, Elkhart, IN, Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, and Flint, MI. Harriet was a life member of the American Library Association, founding member, and longtime officer, of the Friends of the Westerville, Ohio Public Library, member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and the Columbus Museum of Art. She was a recipient of the Westerville Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. In support of public broadcasting, she volunteered for many years at WOSU. A lifelong traveler, she especially enjoyed jaunts around Europe. An author and avid reader, her life was characterized by devotion to education, the arts and active dedication to the promotion of literacy. A dictionary for youth was distributed to school children in honor of her 100th birthdaY. She enjoyed tutoring reading in her later years. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Earl C. Carter and Howard M. Carter, sisters Ruth Carter Hoffman, Dorothy Carter Damsel, and Esther Carter Stewart, nieces Martha Hubbard and Mary Williamson. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
