The Syracuse, N.Y., native was born Jan. 5, 1925, and was the daughter of Emerson B. and Leatah Plank Ferguson. Her late husband of 49 years was Harry E. Nicklaus Sr.; late daughter Melinda Copas; late sisters Betty Welch, Gene Davies, Elsie Bex; and late brothers Robert and Donald Ferguson.
Alta was a member of Burton Memorial Baptist Church, a retired ward clerk at Greenview Regional Hospital and a volunteer at Greenview Hospital for many years, and a Senior Friends Historian from 1972-2002.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Harry E. Nicklaus, Jr. (Kathleen) of Holmen, Wis.;
four daughters, Martha Day (Timothy) of Livingston, Texas, Marilyn Shoemake (Kenneth) of Auburn, Janice Reynolds (Bobby) of Bowling Green, Sarah Holland (Chris) of Dickson, Tenn.;
two sisters, Dorothy Rose of Houston and Annette Andrusyszyn (Tony) of Jamesville, N.Y.;
12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
