Mr. Roger Marion, 81, of Mount Airy, passed away early Thursday morning, February 5, 2015, at Rose Tara Plantation in King. Mr. Marion was born July 19, 1933, in Carroll County, VA, one of nine children born to the late Christopher Columbus Marion, Sr. and Lottie Rogers Short Marion. Roger proudly served our country in the United States Army as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. He retired as the owner and operator of Marion’s Pump Sales and Service and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothea Anderson Marion of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Brenda Marion of South Hill, VA, and Darrell and Mary Marion of Dobson; four grandchildren, Christopher Marion and his wife, Heather, of South Hill, VA, Jessica Putnam of Lynchburg, VA, and Sarah Marion and Claire Marion, both of Dobson; a sister and brother-in-law, Janie and David Browne of Anderson, SC; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Lucille Marion of Dobson and Jasper and Jean Marion of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marion was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Beer, Irene Simmons, Louise Jasper, and an infant sister; and a brother, C.C. Marion, Jr. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from noon until 2:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Rose Tara Plantation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
