Alva was the first born child of James Warren Brannon and Mary Molly Tabitha Jones.

At age 21, on 24 Jan 1904, Alva married Thomas Franklin Martin in Iron City, Calhoun County.

They had four children:
Buford Logan (1905-1973)
Myrtis Laura (1908-1993)
Katie Frances (1914-2007)
Thomas Franklin Jr (1918-2007)

From her obituary in The Anniston Star dated Saturday, 5 June 1965:

"Mrs. Alva B. Martin, 82, of Oxford, Rt. 6, died today at 12:40 a.m. at West End Baptist Hospital in Birmingham after an illness of three weeks.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m., at Iron City Methodist Church with burial in Old Davistown Cemetery. Gray Brown-Service Mortuary in charge.

She is survived by two sons; Buford of Ozark and Franklin of Birmingham; two daughters, Mrs. G.W. Quinn of Birmingham and Mrs. A.J. Nilles of Baltimore, Md; two sisters, Mrs. Augie Rhodes of Piedmont and Mrs. Bessie Clay of Heflin; two brothers, Wallace Brannon of Lincoln and Morgan Brannon of Laguna Beach, Fla., seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild."
