Thomas was the youngest son of Alfred Thomas Martin and Josephine Caroline Crankfield Martin. His father died when he was only two years old. When he was 8 years old his mother married Henry James Busby.

Thomas' paternal grandparents were Charles M Martin and Sarah E S Burton. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Crankfield and Sarah Little.

On 23 Sep 1899, Thomas enlisted into the United States Army and served until 1 Jul 1901. He fought in the Spanish American War as a Private in Company K of the 41st Regiment.

On 24 Jan 1904 in Iron City, Calhoun County, Thomas married the beautiful Alva Alberta Brannon. At the time of his death they had been married 51 years.

They had four children:
Buford Logan (1905-1973)
Myrtis Laura (1908-1993)
Katie Frances (1914-2007)
