Robert Murphy Bennett passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2015 at St. Francis Compassionate Care Hospice. He was 91 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Robert was the son of the late Harrison Bennett and the late Anna Finley Bennett.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Wiltshire Bennett (+1978); mother of Michelle Bennett Smith and her husband Scott and Arthur Bennett and his wife Kimberly; grandfather of Trevor and Malorie Smith and Alexander and Cooper Bennett. He was predeceased by his siblings, William H. Bennett and Marie A. Timinskas.

After graduating from Bartram High School, Robert became a member of the "Greatest Generation", he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and was assigned to the 125 AAF Batallion Unit assigned to the European Theater warfront. Assigned to the "Flying Fortress" B-17 bomber, Sgt. Bennett was their tail gunner. During his 6th flight mission over Germany, their plane was shot down and he was taken captive as a POW. His service earned him the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, European-Africa-Middle Eastern Medal with a "V". He also received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Robert originally worked as a brakeman for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder through various positions and retired from Amtrak as a Car Inspector Supervisor and Rules Examiner for the Philadelphia Region. He retired in 1988 after 46 years of service.

Robert was a member of the United Transportation Union, NARVRE (National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees) and the American Legion, Richard C. Dupont Post # 18 in Claymont, DE.

Retirement was great for Robert. He walked almost everyday at Bellevue State Park until his stroke in 2010. You could find him tinkering around the house on projects, woodworking, gardening and tending to his children's "Daddy to-do" lists. He loved his Phillies and Eagles and enjoyed watching them on TV. Most of all....spending time with the grandchildren and giving them fudgesicle fudge pops! He will be missed by all.

A viewing will be held from 2:00PM until 3:00PM on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME OF MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania 19348.

A chapel service with United States Air Force Military honors will be offered at 10AM on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware.

Burial will be private at the conclusion of the chapel service.
