Susanna emigrated from Ireland on the "Cotopaxi", leaving from Plymouth with her husband and their infant son, Thomas (born in January 1880), and on 30 December in Adelaide, their second son William was born. The Flewellens lived in Adelaide for about a year before crossing the Tasman and settling in Christchurch.
Susanna and Thomas had two more sons Samuel and James, and two daughters Lucretia and Elizabeth. Susanna had a busy life as a Christchurch police constable's wife and mother of six children.
Susanna was widowed in August 1911 and died in Christchurch on 24 April 1930 at the age of 86 years. She is buried with Samuel in a family plot in the Linwood Cemetery on 26 April 1930. (Block 24, plot number 99). Their daughters Elizabeth and Lucretia are also buried there. Neither of Susanna and Samuel's two daughters ever married.
