Samuel Flewellen was born in Gurteen and baptised Samuel Fluellyn in the Church of Ireland in Castlecomer Parish on 21st April 1842. He was the son of Thomas Fluellyn (a farmer) and Elizabeth Wilson.

In 1863, Samuel joined the Royal Irish Constabulary rising to the rank of Sergeant.

Samuel married his first wife Mary Anne Floyd in Waterford in 1874. On 19th April 1875, Mary Anne had a son, Thomas William, but the child did not survive and Mary Anne died a week later.

In 1878, Samuel married his second wife, Susanna Brown, in Kilmacthomas, Waterford. It is from this marriage that the New Zealand Flewellens are descended.

Samuel and Susannah arrived in New Zealand via Australia about 1881 with their two infant sons - Thomas and William (who was born in Adelaide en route to New Zealand). They were passengers on the "Cotopaxi" which arrived in Adelaide on 1st November, 1880. Susannah was recorded as 29 and Samuel 38. Their four other children, Lucretia, Elizabeth, Samuel and James were born in St Albans in Christchurch where Samuel was the local Police Constable. He was later transferred to Bingsland, Richmond.
