Julia Lydia Newton (Aebig) passed away peacefully at Diamond Lodge on May 20th, 1997, eighteen days before her 100th birthday. Julia was the seventh of twelve children born to Jacob and Marie Aebig at Plymouth, Jefferson County Nebraska on June 7th, 1897. The family came to Canada in March of 1902 and settled north of Laird, SK. Julia married Albert William Newton from Biggar on July 11, 1917 and this union was blessed with ten children, four daughters and six sons. Julia was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Marie, five sisters, six brothers, her husband Albert in 1943, infant son Roy in 1934 and son Gary in 1993.
Julia is survived by Dorothy (George) Campbell, Edmonton, Gladys (Robert) Anderson, Penticton, Loah (Richard) Bentham, Penticton, Howard (Hazel) Newton, Livelong, Joyce (Peter) Nakonechny, Plenty, Ken (Merle) Newton, Biggar, Raymond (Delores) Newton, Biggar, Rhoda Newton, Biggar, Delmar (Carol) Newton, Penticton, special member of the family Dorothy McFarland, Longview WA, sisters in law, Frances Aebig, Saskatoon, Emily Aebig, Calgary, 29 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and number neices and nephews. Julia was a charter member of the Biggar Ladies Trainmen, an active member of the United Church and a charter and life member of the Royal Purple serving as Chaplain for 29 years.
Grandma as she was affectionately called by many enjoyed "a good visit", gardening, playing cards and baking. Grandma will be remembered for her sense of humour, her strength and dedication to her family. Her passion and zest for life was an inspiration to all of us. The Service of Remembrance was held on May 24th, 1997 at the Biggar United Church with Rev. Neil Milard officiating. The Eulogy was given by Gladys Anderson. Pallbearers were grandsons, Murray Anderson, Murray Newton, Darrell Newton, Donald Nakonechny, Jim Newton and Jerry Newton. Soloist was Arlene Richards and organist Doreen Dubreuil. Interment was in Biggar Cememtery. Biggar Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
