Martha Ann Rogers was born in Indiana in 1843 and died in California in 1919, having been an invalid the last few years of her life. Martha's father Benjamin was a farmer and, two years after her mother Mary's death in 1863, Benjamin remarried and the family moved to a farm in Marion County, Iowa.
There Martha met and married Civil War veteran A. V. Kendrick in Marion County, Iowa on Sept. 29, 1866. She gave birth to six children, four of whom lived into adulthood*: *Rolla Martin, Mary Olivia, *Lena Grace, May Belle, *Alva Allen, and *William R. C.
According to her daughter Lena (when writing about Martha): "My mother's grandfather taught music and was a good musician. That's where my mother, Rolla, and Alvah got their talent. My mother went away to school for music. She had a nice voice and played the piano. Her father loved music and sang during the Civil War. Mother sang in public at large affairs. She sang and played in Church Choirs when first married. That was why she and Rolla were so close - "kindred spirits" & Will and I loved music , but were a failure when it came to singing and playing. We were Kendrick there."
Martha said that she was preceded by three successive generations of Benjamin Rogers. Her father, Benjamin III (born in 1821 in Indiana and died in 1905 in Iowa) married Mary B. Malcolm (born in 1821 and died in 1863) on Feb. 8, 1843 in Jefferson County, Indiana. Grandfather Benjamin II (born in South Carolina in 1782) married Rachael Wallace (1789-1852) in North Carolina. They moved first to Scott County, Kentucky, then to Hamilton County, Ohio, and finally settled on a farm in Jefferson County, Indiana (where he died in 1862). Family lore said that her great-grandfather was also Benjamin Rogers I, who was born in South Carolina sometime before 1760 and died in 1785. The father of Rachael Wallace was Aaron Wallace (born in 1759 and died in 1838). The preceding Wallace line traces back to the Wallace family of Scottish history.
