Born in Watertown, SD to Carl and Eva (Blaker) Bell, Vern moved to Salem in 1937 with his family, where he attended and graduated from Salem High School in 1940.

Vern worked as a bookkeeper at the Ladd & Bush Bank in Salem until joining the Navy in 1942, where he served in the South Pacific and as a Medic on assignment to the U.S. Marine Corps. After his discharge in December, 1945, Vern returned to work at the Ladd & Bush Bank where he met a girl named Ruth, who also worked at the Bank. Vern and Ruth were married March 25, 1948 in Salem. Together they raised their 3 children; Lynda, David and Robert. In 1956, Vern accepted a position and worked with First Federal Savings & Loan until his retirement in 1981.

Vern had been a member of the West Hills Community Church since 1948 and was active with the Salem Downtown Lions Club. Family was always his first passion, followed by golf, oil painting, camping and fishing.

Vern was preceded in death by his sister Vivian and brothers Arlie, Roy and Carl Jr. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, daughter Lynda (and Gary) Brown. Sons; David (and Christine) Bell and Robert (and Shirleen) Bell as well as 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2:30pm Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the West Hills Community Church,1650 Brush College Rd. NW in Salem. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
