He was the son of Pilbos and Antaram Der Avedisian. His father was the son of the priest of the village of Mashgerd, Arapkir in Turkey, the Ottoman Empire and it is believed Ohannes was born there as well. Ohannes is said to have married a woman named Haji Gil, and had daughters Vartanoush (married Chesgurian) and Doudou. It is not known if Ohannes and his family remained in Arapkir or moved elsewhere, but it is said he died in the Armenian Genocide so he is given a death year here of 1915.
