While a family tree holds he and his siblings as children of priest Der Avedis Der Avedisian and his wife Bilbil of Mashgerd, Arapkir, Turkey, it is more likely they were their grandchildren. He is estimated to have been born around 1840-1850. He married Antaram Der Yeghiazarian and had three sons Ohannes, Garabed, and Mugurdich. They were likely born in Arapkir, but Garabed moved to the coastal town of Zonguldak where he owned coal mines and became very wealthy. Mugurdich's children are known to have lived in Istanbul, so it is possible that Mugurdich had moved there as well. It is not known what happened to Pilbos and Antaram, if they moved away from Arapkir as well, or when they died.
