DEATH SUMMONS MAJOR McGRATH
-One of Eau Claire’s Most Esteemed Citizens Passes Away Last Night
-Had a Long Honorable Career

Major John F. McGrath* was summoned by death last night shortly after 8 o’clock at his home in this city, 703 Main Street. The cause of his death was the result of a stroke of paralysis contracted a week ago, and which had kept him confined to his bed. While it was generally known that his condition was serious, the announcement of his demise was a shock.
[*John F. McGrath was a Corporal, not a Major, who served with the New York engineers. He later served as an alderman, and possibly a mayor, which might explain why he was called "Major".]

Major McGrath had been one of Eau Claire’s most respected citizens for fifty years, having located in this city in 1858, when the place was yet in its infancy. In public and private capacities he won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact.

Major McGrath had a long and valued career. He was born in Ireland on June 24, 1826. He crossed the waters in the year 1842, coming direct to the U.S.. Until 1848, he made his home in the states of Vermont and New York, having in 1848 moved to the Badger state, and located in Fond du Lac, [where he] lived for 10 years. He came to Eau Claire in 1858.

Since coming to Eau Claire, Majopr McGrath had spent an active life. The beginning of his Army career was when he enlisted in the First New York Engineers in 1865 and served continuously to the end of the Civil War, rising in the Army ranks during that time.

The deceased held a number of public offices during his earlier life in Eau Claire. From the year 1859-1860, he acted in the capacity of town clerk of what was then termed North Eau Claire. He was elected alderman in 1875, and served through 1882.

Major McGrath was the father of the late Hugh Jocylin McGrath, who was a regular in the Fourth U.S. Cavalry, and who gave up his life in the service in 1899 during the Spanish-American War in the Philippines. [Hugh J. McGrath was buried in Arlington Cemetery, Wash. D.C.]

The deceased leaves to mourn the widow [Mary Burns McGrath], one daughter, Mrs. J. C. [Mary Jessie] Gilbertson of this city, and one son, Emmet F. McGrath of Denver, Colorado. There are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Major McGrath was a member of the G. A. R. Post in this city, and also a member of the Old Settlers’ Association.

The funeral will take place on Monday, Nov. 9th, at 9 a.m. from St. Patrick’s Church, the Rev. A. B. C. Dunne officiating.
