Samuel SHIRLEY was born 10d 5m 1837 in Brown Twsp, Hendricks Co, Indiana the son of William SHILREY & his 1st wife Sarah (PRESLEY) SHRILEY. Apparently Samuel SHIRLEY knew the WILLIAMS family and probably followed them to Gentry Co, Missouri where he married Mahala Jane WILLIAMS daughter of Riley Wilson Williams & Lovey (CARTER) WILLIAMS on 22d 9m 1856. Samuel & Mahala's first child William Riley SHIRLEY was born on 28 November 1857 in Gentry Co near Albany.

In 1860 Samuel & Mahala and their young son William Riley were living in Breckenridge Twsp, Putnam Co, Missouri. However, they did not live there for very long. 1861 ushered in the Civil War and even though Samuel SHIRLEY was less than a day's wagon ride from the Iowa state line, he was still inside the border of a Southern state. There was great danger in Missouri for a man of such Union symaties as Samuel Shirley.

Upon returing to to Indiana, Samuel Shirley joined Company D of the 29th Indiana Infantry Regement on 21 September 1864. This regement was part of the large Army of the Tennessee. [Note that the Union always named her armies and battles after the nearest body of water whereas the Confederacy chose the nearest town for names of battles.]He contracted measles and other afflictions which would leave him in poor health for the rest of his life. Samuel was discharged at Chattanoga, Tennessee on 15 May 1865 at the age of 28. His height was listed at 5 feet 8 inches. In 1866/1867, Samuel & Mahala returned to Putnam Co, Missouri with four children.

A combination of the desire of Mahala to be close to her family probably caused Samuel to move his family to Harrison Twsp, Mercer Co, Missouri in 1872/1873. The Shirley homestead adjoined that of the Riley Williams homestead. Both are located in Sec 36 of R 25W T 65N or a little over a mile east of Goshen. By the time he moved his family to Mercer Co, Samuel was very sick. He wintered in Waverly, Saline Co, Missouri to escape the extreme weather that so terribly worsened his condition.

Samuel SHIRLEY died from tuberculosis on 27 September 1876 in Harrison Twsp, Mercer Co. He was only 39 years old. Mahala later remarried (1882) to their daughter-in-law's [Margaret Loretta (SLOVER) SHIRLEY] widowed father-Raleigh Ducan SLOVER.
