Ruby Virginia Davis Shepherd, loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, departed her earthly life on Thursday January 22, 2015 with her family at her side.

Born September 11, 1922, in Snow Creek, Va., Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Middleton and Virginia Arrington Davis; her brothers, John Davis and wife, Mary, Ben Davis and wife, Beulah, and infant brother Raymond Davis; her sister-in-law, Sybil S. Jennings; and her brothers-in-law, John Shepherd and Joel Shepherd.

Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 64 years, Edward William Shepherd. Ruby is also survived by their four children and their spouses, Martha and Jim Hanna of Roanoke, Bill and Cheryl Shepherd of Roanoke, Gini and Andy Agee of Roanoke, and Katie and Steve McAllister of Lexington; nine grandchildren, Joshua and Stefani Shepherd of Ashburn, Cole and Sarah Shepherd of Roanoke, Jayme Shepherd and fiancé, Mike Geeslin, of Atlanta, Andrew Ross and Elise Carlson of Asheville, Shepherd McAllister and Lauren Carroll of College Station, Texas, Elle Agee of Roanoke, Preston McAllister of Prescott, Ariz., Meredith McAllister of Lexington, and Annie B. Agee of Roanoke; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Everett, Eben, Miles and Eamon Shepherd; sisters, Evelyn Hunt of Lynchburg, and Bettina Divers of Rocky Mount; and sisters-in-law, Mary Virginia Shepherd and Ila Shepherd. Ruby also loved her numerous nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Lois Porterfield and Susan Hayslett.

Ruby and Ed were married on September 2, 1950, in Rocky Mount and raised their family in Roanoke. Ruby devoted her life to her husband and children and instilling a love of God, family, service, and education. She was an active member of First Christian Church, a volunteer in her children's schools, other community activities, and the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Once her children finished elementary school she went to work part time for ACS and later as the church secretary at First Christian Church from which she retired. She loved her friends and was a founding member of the Thursday Night Bridge Club, a group who played together for over 40 years.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's downtown Roanoke Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Reverend Jim Rivers officiating. Entombment will be at Evergreen Mausoleum at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2015. The family suggests memorials be made to First Christian Church, Church Avenue, Roanoke.
