John (1876-1959) and Ingeborg (1882-1960) Hovde left Ostre Gausdal Gudbrandsdalen, Norway the day after they were married in 1905 to come to America. John's brother Torvil came with them. They boarded a train on the east coast, their destination being Naples, S. Dak. The train stopped in Elrod, and since they couldn't make connections on a scheduled train to Naples, they started out walking and then caught a ride on the hand car with Nels Holmes. Nels Steen met them when they arrived in Naples.

Mr. and Mrs. Hovde went to work for Jens Eggen on the farm that is now the Glen Hanson place in Foxton township for a year. In 1906 they moved to the Hans Steen farm, SWI/4, sec. 14 in Merton. Here they started their lifelong occupation of farming and their first two children were born. Nels (1906 1974) grew up in Merton, married Lida Roberdeau, and later lived in Foxton on a farm. Lisa (b. 1901-) married Frank McGillivary.

After four years (1910) they moved to the Olaus Kirkeby farm, NWI/4 sec. 11, and stayed there until 1916. Edwin (b. 1912, m. Eltha Larson) and Sigurd (b. 1915, m. Elnora Larson) were born there. All of the while John and Ingeborg were accumulating machinery and saving money for the day when they would own their own farm.

In 1915 Hans Gaarder died and in order to settle the estate his homestead went up for sale. John bought it for $60 per acre and he and his family moved into their own home. Three more children were born, Borghild (1917), Emil (1919), and Adeline (1922). Borghild married Earl Ness and Adeline married Axel Bakken.

The Hovdes lived and worked through the good and bad years, they improved their farmstead, and took good care of their land. They built on to the house in 1916, and in later years Mrs. Hovde planted trees around the farmstead. She was a great hand to help her neighbors in times of need. John and Ingeborg lived to celebrate their Golden Wedding in 1955.
