Kevin Harold Sawyer, son of Harold and Ila (Brunstedt) Sawyer, was born February 23, 1955, in Estherville. He passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2015, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 59 with his loving wife at his side.
Kevin received his education in the Estherville school system, graduating from Estherville High School in 1973. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg and later completed his degree at the University of Northern Iowa. Following his education, Kevin enlisted in the United States Navy and made this his lifetime career. While serving in Bahrain, he met Teresa Layola, his future wife. After serving 20 years, Kevin retired from the Navy. Shortly after his retirement, Kevin and Teresa were united in marriage on June 6, 2007 and made their home in Norfolk, Virginia.
Kevin’s next battle came with a diagnosis of esophageal cancer in 2009. Kevin’s passion was athletic competition; during his illness he enjoyed watching all types of sports on television. Kevin was a very free-spirited individual who loved fellowship with others and living life in-the-moment. His greatest joy was spending time with family and he always looked forward to visits to Estherville with Teresa.
Kevin was a past member of First Christian Church, where he was active in church worship, Sunday school and Christian Youth Fellowship. In Norfolk, he loved attending church every week, as Kevin’s belief was strong and his faith was deep.
Left to cherish Kevin’s memory are his wife, Teresa of Norfolk; son, Max Sawyer of Des Moines; daughter, Jacinda Sawyer of Ames; sisters, Dr. Sheila Sawyer (Jeff) of Naples, Florida; Shari Richard (Russell) of Estherville; step-daughter, Ashley of Des Moines and nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
