ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Harold Sawyer, 88, of Estherville will be held at First Christian Church in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating.

Military graveside rites by VFW?Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville.

He passed away, Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society.

Harold M. Sawyer, the son of Harold "Carl" and Ruth (Yates) Sawyer, was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Estherville.

He received his education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1944. Harold served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Estherville.

On Jan. 7, 1951, Harold was united in marriage to Ila Leona Brunstedt in Estherville. The couple made their home in Estherville where they began raising their family and Harold was employed at Golden Sun Feeds as Credit Manager. He retired following 37 years of service at Golden Sun. Ila died Oct. 25, 2001. In his leisure time Harold enjoyed playing golf and loved attending high school and college athletic events. Most important to Harold was spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Estherville where he was very active, serving as an Elder and Deacon and also on various committees and groups. Harold was also a member of VFW Post 3388, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Club in Estherville. Harold was one of the longest serving members on the Estherville City Council, serving from March 1975 until January 2012. He served on several committees for the City, with the most notable being finance, labor relations, and the ECCOG board.

Left to cherish Harold's memory are his three children; Dr. Sheila Sawyer-Adams of Naples, Florida; Kevin Sawyer and his wife, Theresa of Norfolk, Va.; Shari Richard and her husband, Russell of Estherville and five grandchildren; Stephanie and Keith Richard; Max and Jacinda Sawyer; Asley (Peterson) Hill; and friend, Lois Clague.

Preceding Harold in death were his wife, parents, and one brother, Verle.
