He was born on May 5, 1928 in rural Allen County, a son of the late Ralph E. and Erlena M. (Yerks) Kurtz. He graduated from Harlan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifelong farmer, operating Kurtz Farms located in rural Allen County. He was a member at Promise Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne. He was also active with Associated Churches, serving on their board for several years, and the Harlan Lions Club. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed collecting coins and arrowheads. He also greatly enjoyed going to his children and grandchildren's activities, rarely missing them.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June (Keller) Kurtz; an infant daughter, Susan; and four sisters and three brothers.
