Truitt Vivian Lively, J.D., born July 27, 1928, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 4, 2015. Truitt was a dedicated man of God and a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Truitt was born and reared in Pelly, Texas, the son of an oilfield worker. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown where he was Salutatorian of the class of 1946. Truitt then attended Robert E. Lee Junior College as a straight 'A' student and completed his education at the University of Texas in Austin, where he became a lifetime Longhorn. Truitt earned his law degree at South Texas College of Law. While in school, Truitt met and married his bride of 64 years, Barbara. Together they settled in Houston, Texas, where Truitt worked for Humble Oil and Alcoa. In 1957, Truitt and Barbara moved to Spring Branch and opened his law practice. While staying true to his roots in the law, Truitt chose to branch out into the world of real estate. He loved the land and spent the rest of his life in land development and building apartment projects and shopping centers. Truitt became very involved in the young Spring Branch community, helping start the Spring Branch Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis. Always a man who loved learning, he was very interested in education. During a period of phenomenal growth in the 60's, Truitt served as a trustee for Spring Branch ISD School Board for nine years and the last year served as president. He was instrumental in the expansion of the schools and the building of Tully Stadium. When Truitt wasn't conducting business, his passion was golfing, anytime and anywhere. Truitt spent much of his time as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Baptist Church, Park Temple Baptist Church, Long Point Baptist Church and Tallowood Baptist Church. His later years were spent at Second Baptist Church where he enjoyed attending activities for his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed the Old-fashioned Hymn Sings. He served on the board of Michael Guido's "The Sower", now a world-wide radio ministry. He was a man of deep faith, supported many ministries and people in need. Of all of his accomplishments, Truitt was most proud of his 3 children, their love for the Lord and their involvement in ministry. It was Truitt's pride and joy to spend time with his family studying the word of God.
In the late 60's, Truitt received the life-changing diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, for which he "accepted for his own good" for 46 years. Then in the late 2000's, Alzheimer's began its work on his mind. But never did he complain or want to inconvenience others. He centered his life on the message of Jeremiah 29:11, "'For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'." We are so grateful that he knew all of his family and many friends until the end of his life. He maintained his sense of humor and love for others. He could still quote scripture and sing the words to every hymn he had ever learned, even though he could not remember 5 minutes ago. In the last years, he was always fine if Barbara was there. It was a love affair for the centuries and one in which he relished. God is good and we were blessed.
Truitt is survived by his devoted wife whom he called "the most beautiful woman I ever met", Barbara Raines Lively, his sisters Doris Lively Bell and Geraldine Lively, his children, Cheryl Lively Currey and husband Bob of Houston, Texas, Tricia Lively Campos and husband Jesse of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Michael Lively and wife Peggy of Clear Lake, Texas, and grandchildren, Jennifer Currey Van Matre and husband Joe, Michelle Campos Braga and husband Jorge, Stefanie Currey Litzler and husband John, Sarah Campos Chapman and husband Asa, Jared Lively, Austin Lively, Carrie Lively and Nathan Lively, great grandchildren Lorenzo Braga and Abel Chapman and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Truitt is preceded in death by his parents Carrie Stringer Lively and Homer Littleton Lively, his brothers Coy Littleton Lively, Marvin Earl Lively and Homer Granville Lively.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in the afternoon at 1:30pm on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Second Baptist Church in the Old Sanctuary, 6400 Woodway in Houston. Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Deacon's Parlor.
