A 1943 graduate of Souderton High School, Richard served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, Alderfer graduated from Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio, in 1950. He received his master's degree from Temple University in 1953, and in 1976, earned his PhD. From Ohio University at Athens.
From 1953 to 1967, Alderfer was speech and psychology teacher at Eisenhower Senior High School, Norristown, and from 1967 to 1990, taught public speaking in the Communication Studies Department at Bloomsburg University, where he was department chairman from 1980 to 1984. Alderfer co-authored a book on public speaking in 1998: "Public Speaking: An Experimental Approach."
He was a member of Lightstreet United Methodist Church, where he served as adult Sunday school teacher and lay speaker.
A private pilot, Alderfer was a member of the Bloomsburg Airport Flying Club and the Parlor City Flying Club. A former member of the Bloomsburg Lions Club for many years, he was also a member of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Retired Faculties and was a life member of the National Education Association.
Alderfer was a board member and spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity; was a volunteer at Orangeville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Columbia Child Development for several years. He also served on the Orange township Sewer Authority for 10 years.
