Phillip J. Flax, 86, Ellis, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 9, 1922, in Ransom to Albert and Elizabeth (Aschenbrenner) Flax.

He married Anna Schuster on Sept. 20, 1948, in Ellis.

He was a retired farmer and stockman and worked in the oil fields as a pumper. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Ellis.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; four daughters, Phyllis Knoll and husband, Fred, Hays, and Charlotte Pfeifer and husband, Eldon, Ruth Bollig and husband, Richard, and Millie Haas and husband, Gary, all of Ellis; four brothers, Clarence Flax and wife, Marilyn, Dodge City, Alfred Flax and wife, Verna, WaKeeney, Lawrence Flax and wife, Pearl, Salina, and Albert Flax Jr. and wife, Shirley, Ellis; five sisters, Elizabeth Lang and Teresa Gnad, both of Hays, Anna Pfeifer, WaKeeney, and Agnes Burns and Freda Dietz, both of Ellis; 11 grandchildren, Shawn and Grady Knoll, Sheldon, Jason and Brandon Pfeifer, Janelle Mongeau, Preston and Alyson Bollig, Daniel, Daren and Dylan Haas; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Joe, William, Tony, and infant brother, John; and a sister, Rosie Burns.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Ellis; burial in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors by Ellis VFW. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Keithley Funeral Chapel, Ellis. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus rosary, both at the church.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's School in care of the funeral home.
