"James Monroe Speed Jr, known as Jim or JM, first wife was a cousin, Emaline A Rawls. They had four children. They divorced. He then married the widow Delphia Anderson Murray. They had five children. After Delphia's death, he married her [niece] Laura [Mayfield]. They had five children.

A successful and hard-working farmer, his goal was to leave a farm to each of his children, which he did. A right-living man, he still liked a glass of wine before bedtime. Whenever his daughter Annis visited, she would make quantities of wine for him which he kept in jugs under the bed. He said Annis' wine was the best."
