Memorial services for Josef "Stu" Francis of Newberg were held Tuesday in Attrell's Newberg Chapel-Brown Funeral Home. Interment was private.

Mr. Francis died Jan. 21, 1989, in the Hospice House in Portland. He was 57.

He was born July 29, 1931, in Portland, the son of Ted and Grace Heater Francis. He attended schools in Newberg and was graduated in 1949. He attended Oregon State University for 2 1/2 years.

He was prominent in local civic affairs. He was general manager of the Berrian Festival (now the Old-Fashioned Days) in 1961 and was awarded the Leading Junior Citizen Award in 1962. He was a member of the Newberg Chamber of Commerce for many years and had served as that group's director, secretary, second vice president and president.

Mr. Francis was a frequent contributor to the Newberg Graphic, writing both sports and news articles.

He was a partner in a family owned movie theater business, and owned three travel agencies: Howard Travel in McMinnville, Barbur Boulevard Travel in Portland and Forest Grove Travel.

Mr. Francis, a member of Willamette Athletic Club, was an avid racquetball player who averaged 10 hours playing per week. He also had an extensive ukulele collection and was a talented player. He frequently played at Nick's Italian Restaurant in McMinnville.

Mr. Francis had an active interest in Newberg High Schoo's track and field program for more than 15 years. He assisted coaches, acted as an official and served as mentor to many of the participants.

He married Geri Nelson on March 28 1986, in McMinnville and they lived in Newberg. They enjoyed traveling and attending sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Geri Francis; his parents, Ted and Grace Francis of Newberg; a brother, Bob Francis of Newberg; and children, Melinda Francis and Donald Francis, both of Tualatin; and two stepsons, Todd Nelson of Corvallis and Eric Nelson of Salem.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stu Francis Scholarship Fund at Newberg High School, in care of the U.S. National Bank of Oregon's Newberg Branch, 515 E. First St.
