Joel, son of Joshua and Rachel M. Mallory Peck, was born at Jay, Essex County, New York. His siblings were: Parrilla, Philo, Phodima, David, Lyman, Andrew, Thomas, Alvah, and Polly. He was ordained at the Jay Baptist Church in 1827. Joel and Rosamond Purmort were married 12 December 1832 at Jay. He served churches in New York state from 1822-1832 then in Ohio from 1832-1838. The family was on Bear Crick near Plainfield, Illinois when he died on September 8, 1839 or 1840. He and Rosamond were the parents of James H., Judson, Phineas, John W. and Mary Peck Boynton. The family moved back to Jay after his death and later to Henderson County, Illinois.
