Gooke H. Westermann was born in Ochtelbur, Ostfriesland, a son of Harm Itzkes Gooken Westermann and his wife Gretje Jacobs. He immigrated in 1856 aboard the vessel Stella. He first settled in Woodford County, Illinois, where he married and had six children. He and his wife later moved to Douglas Co, Washington.
