Charles LaVern Mitchell 71, of Alsey, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 29, 2004, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born May 9, 1932 in Jersey County; the son of Charles L. and Dorothy Schaff Mitchell. He married Margaret Louise Wheeler Aug. 5, 1951 in Winchester, and she preceded him in death in 2002.
He is survived by three sons, Charles (wife, Donna) Mitchell of Roodhouse, Dale (wife, Hazel) Mitchell of Winchester, and Mike (wife, Pam) Mitchell of Manchester; four daughters, Becky (husband, Robert) Phillips of Dekalb, Betty (husband, Gary) Lemons of Roodhouse, Alice Mitchell of Alsey, Dorothy (husband, Kim) Goddair of Woodson; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clyde (wife, Sandy) of Murrayville, and George (wife, Phyllis) of East Moline; and one sister, Reba (husband, Elmer) Witwer of Winchester. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Lamont; one son, John; one daughter, Tanya; and one granddaughter, Kayla.
Mr. Mitchell was a truck driver in the area all his working life working for various local companies including Alsey Refractories and Nestle's. He attended school in Jersey and Scott counties. He was a Baptist. He loved to watch sports, drive his truck, play the harmonica and he loved his dogs. He was a US Army veteran serving in Korea.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with burial in Bowers Cemetery at Alsey. Military rites were conducted. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to Diabetes Research.
