He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, William Smith Bryan & Catherine Morgan of County Clare, Ireland who arrived in the English Colony of Virginia ca. 1650-1660. On his mother side, she was the maternal grandchild of wealthy planter Sherwood Haywood and his wife, Eleanor Howard Hawkins of Raleigh, Wake Co, NC.
