Laabs, Lawrence L: (1904-1990); d. 11-01-1990;

{“Lorenz (Lawrence) LeRoy Laabs was born March 11, 1904 at Davenport. In 1907 he lived on his grandparents’ farm until they moved to Eltopia when he was six. He walked to school one and one-half miles.

In 1915 home was the farm 12 miles south of Odessa, school was just a half mile away from the farm. He drove a car to high school at Odessa the first years and then he worked on the farm for Albert until he came to Seattle to work in the shipyard as a marine wire man for Sea Tac Shipyards.

On October 31, 1942 he was inducted into the army at Fort Lewis. When he was 38 years old he got an honorable discharge because of his age. He was in the army in Texas for seven months. Soon after that he was hired back at the shipyards at the same job until 1946. He then was employed at Seattle Brick Yards until he retired in 1966 and has lived in the same home since 1945”.

Lawrence Laabs was a son of Charles Wesley Laabs and his wife Anna Dorothea Timm Laabs. The Laabs family moved countless times while he was growing up. The dust storms south of Odessa resulted in the family going into bankruptcy and moving to the grandfather’s Harrington place (August Timm). Lawrence was 21 when his father died.
