Ethel W. Newell, 86, of Boise, Idaho passed away peacefully July 19, 2009 in a Boise hospital.
Ethel was born December 28, 1922 to Russell and Nancy Duncan in Wellston, Oklahoma. She was raised and educated there.
During WWII, she worked in Civil Service at Tinker Field in Oklahoma City and Hickam Field in Oahu, Hawaii. It was a big accomplishment and very exciting for her to cross the ocean all by herself!
She returned to the mainland and met a handsome cowboy, Glenn L. Newell, while living with her sister in Meridian. They were married two weeks later, and enjoyed 62 years together. They had two sons, David and Geary.
She worked as an election registrar for 17 years and was proud of those years of service. The young family moved several times with Glenn’s work and returned to Boise to stay in 1957.
Ethel loved to take road trips with Glenn whenever they could. She especially loved to drive in the mountains to see the birds and wildlife. She also enjoyed taking vacations with the whole family. Those vacations included trips to Yellowstone and the Oregon Coast. Our last family trip was in June to Sun Valley. We are all very grateful for our memories of that special time.
Ethel is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Glenn L. Newell, sons David E. and wife Kathi, and Geary L. and wife Launa, all of Boise. Grandchildren; Angie, Katie, Jeff, James and Joe Newell, Todd Hobdey and Kristi Hinkle, and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Lindy Duncan and sisters Josie Burgess and Betty Grillo in Oklahoma, and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers William and Herman Duncan, and sisters Bessie Summers, Edna Eades and Winnie Lutz.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise with a committal service to follow at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens in Meridian.
Condolences to the family may be submitted online at www.CloverdaleFuneralHome.com.
