She was born on September 8, 1923, on the family farm in Millville Township, Clayton County, Iowa, the sixth child of George John and Gertrude Alice (Collins) Troester. Nellie was baptized on October 31, 1927. On November 28, 1942, she was united in marriage to Carl R. Johanningmeier at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. On December 19, 1943, she was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville.

Nellie attended the Friedlein Country School and graduated from Guttenberg High School where she completed the Normal Training Course at the age of 17. Nellie taught in a one-room country school house at Brick School District #5 in Millville Township near Luxemburg. The beginning of the school year was postponed until her 18th birthday when she received her Teaching Certificate. Her teaching career ended when she and Carl were married, as it was against the rules at that time to have a married woman teach. Nellie was proud to be Carl’s wife, devoting much of her life to her beloved husband, serving proudly by his side, supporting him and encouraging expansion in their farming operations. Nellie raised three daughters while being a homemaker and an avid gardener. They lived almost their entire lives in Clayton County and she enjoyed traveling all over the world. Nellie was Chairman of Clayton County Easter Seals for many years, she enjoyed the fellowship of the neighborhood Friendship Circle and was active at her church.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, on August 25, 2006; her parents; three brothers, Philip, Arthur and Lester Troester and two sisters, Emma McDowell and Bernice Walters.
