Obituary
Alice A Fehler, 97, of McGregor was called home by her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening December the 13th, 2014. The memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church at 503 South Tyler in McGregor, Texas at 10am Saturday December 20th, 2014. Visitation with the family will follow in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Born on March 7th, 1917 to Ernest and Ida Wiese, Alice grew up in Whitehall, Texas where she attended school until the 8th grade. Alice had three sisters, Irene, Ernestine, and Ida. Growing up during the depression, Alice cultivated a strong capacity for resilience as well as an unshakable faith in her Heavenly Father. She was an avid reader and maintained a good memory for accounting details through most of her life.
Alice married Herbert Fehler on January 24, 1941. On August 2, 1945 their son Edward was born. She was a talented gardener, seamstress, and cook who deeply loved her husband, son, and wider family. She and Herbert farmed and raised cattle together until retirement. When grandchildren came along, Alice balanced gardening, sewing clothes for the family, and housekeeping with the willingness to be the primary babysitter. Alice loved cooking for family and friends and often planned and hosted Sunday Dinners that would culminate in spirited games of 84 that would last far into the night.
Alice was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church during the majority of her life. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society, which is currently known as the Women of the ELCA. For many years Alice and the other ladies spent all of February baking cookies to take to the residents of Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home and Westview Manor. Their little group also formed an entertainment troupe called: "The Kitchen Combo," who would dress up in long, prairie-styled dresses and bonnets and sing while playing instruments that they had fashioned from washboards and other kitchen gadgets. Alice was also a member of Zion's chancel choir and served as a Sunday School teacher as well as many other positions of service to her faith community.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Ida Wiese, stepmother Antonia Wiese, husband Herbert Fehler, and sisters Ida Wiese, Irene Presley, and Ernestine London.
Left to carry on her legacy of faith, perseverance, and compassion are her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Diane Fehler; granddaughter Kimberly Fehler and her daughter Hannah Fehler-Brunner; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Stephen and Casey Fehler; and their children Kody and Makenna Fehler. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many treasured friends.
Arrangements under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, McGregor, TX.
