Adele Stoneman -
Daughter of Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the Civil War and afterwards Governor of the State of California. Her mother was Mary Oliver Hardisty, who was once prominent in Baltimore society. They had four children, two sons and two daughters. Adele was their youngest child. She had a beautiful contralto voice, with a career on the stage, singing in light opera. She made her first professional appearance, playing the role of Lorraine in the "Princess Chic," at the Columbia Theater, in San Francisco in February 1903. She became the bride of Louis A. Schmidgall on 29 June 1910, in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Louis was the son of, Frederick Schmidgall and Wilhemina "Minnie" Kies, both of Germany. Adele Stoneman, was his second wife, they had no children. Adele (Stoneman) Schmidgall died in 1939, in Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York. Interment at East Hillside Cemetery, in Glen Head, Nassau County, New York. Of her immediate family she was survived by her beloved husband, Louis A. Schmidgall, and her cherished sister, Katharine Cheney Stoneman.
