George John Stoneman Esq. -
Son of Major General George Stoneman, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point; distinguished cavalry officer in the civil war and afterwards Governor of the State of California. His mother was Mary Oliver Hardisty, who was once prominent in Baltimore society. They had four children, two sons and two daughters. George John was their third child and youngest son. His education in the primary grades was in California. He studied law at the University of Michigan, graduating in the class of 1889. He first located in Seattle, Washington, entering into the practice of his profession, where in 1892 he was elected to the office of City Clerk. Removing to Arizona in 1896 where he practiced law in Globe, specializing in mining and corporation work. He was elected in 1898 District Attorney of Gila county, and reelected to that office twice. In 1907 he was appointed to the Board of Law Examiners. In 1908 he was elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Denver. In 1909 he was appointed to the Arizona Railroad Commission, serving until the Territory was admitted to Statehood. In 1910 he was elected to the Presidency of the Arizona Territorial Bar Association. In 1911 he changed his residence to Phoenix, Maricopa county, where he set up his offices in the State Capital of that city, at the Goodrich Building. In 1920 he was on the Board of Curators of the State Library. Then in 1921 returning to California where he resided at 2215 Arlington Avenue, Los Angeles. His Law Firm, Kibbey & Stoneman, located in the H. W. Hellman building, in the City of Los Angeles. In 1924 he was confirmed as Commissioner, of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners, for the City of Los Angeles, being reappointed in that office until his death on 1 December 1928, in Los Angeles county, California. Services were held on December 4, 1928, at 4 P.M. from the Los Angeles Crematory, under the direction of Ruppe Mortuary, 830 West Washington Street. He was posthumously inducted into the Maricopa County Bar Association Hall of Fame, where he was honored for his public service, and extraordinary contributions to law and justice.
