He was born August 7, 1818 in Pope County, Illinois and died on October 27, 1862 of dysentery at the Regimental Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. John Franklin Hemphill was the son of Robert Guilford Hemphill and Jane Glass.
He had two sons, Samuel and John Franklin, Jr. who were both living in Gallatin County, Illinois when they enlisted.
Samuel enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 6th Illinois Cavalry.
John Franklin, Jr. enlisted as a substitute in Indiana, and was hospitalized several times during his tour of duty.
He died at age 28 of a lung hemorrhage, a result of his Civil War service.
