Benjamin Gunsalus died Tuesday, shortly before noon, at the home of James H. White in this city.
Benjamin Gunsalus was born in Center county, Pennsylvania, April 1, 1835. He came of an old Pennsylvania family. Mr. Gunsalus's school days were limited. He worked on the farm and in the lumber camps until he became of age, when he bought a farm and coal mine which he operated. In 1855 he was married to Miss Sarah White. After selling his Pennsylvania property Mr. Gunsalus, with his family, came west in 1867, leaving his wife and children in southern Minnesota for a time until he located a new home. He chose a home on the east bank of Union lake, in Hudson where his wife and children joined him. In 1889 eighty acres of the old farm was sold, Mr. Gunsalus retaining the home eighty until about six years ago when he sold to F. E. Westerfeld. Mrs. Gunsalus died March 16, 1897 and on May 9, 1899 Mr. Gunsalus was married the second time to Sophia J. White. After selling his farm the deceased moved to Pelican Rapids where he bought a small farm. This farm was sold last winter. Early this summer a home was bought in Alexandria and Mr. and Mrs. Gunsalus last week moved to this city, hoping that old scenes and the association with old friends would benefit the former's health, which had been failing for several years. The hope was not to be fulfilled, death occurring before the new home was occupied.
The deceased was one of the old residents of the county and was respected for his honesty and upright character. He leaves, besides a widow, three children, William Gunsalus lives at Groton, S.D., Butler Gunsalus at Pelican Rapids, Minn., and Mrs. T. J. Steele on a part of the old farm in Hudson.
The funeral will be held from the Methodist church in this city tomorrow, Friday, afternoon, Rev. Geo. E. Tindall officiating. The interment will be in the cemetery at Union Lake. The pallbearers will be James Walker, L. J. Brown, C. H. Raiter, J. B. Cowing, C. Oppell, John Sheldon, all acquaintances of the early days.
