James A. Duvall, acting captain of police, whose skull was fractured in a fall from his house, 2200 4th street northeast, last Thursday while he was painting the roof, died at Casualty Hospital last night about 6 o'clock. He was one of the most active members of the force and was in charge of the police school of instruction.

James A. Duvall had served as a member of the police force nearly a quarter century. Appointed a private on the force, he quickly mastered the work to which he was assigned, and Maj. Sylvester, then head of the department, singled him out for advancement in acknowledgement of his worth. He had performed emergency duty in practically every precinct and engaged in much of the department's confidential work.

He was twice married and is survived by his wife and seven children. One son, James A. Duvall, Jr., is serving in the army in France. Members of Keane Council, Knights of Columbus, with which organization he was connected, will attended the funeral.

Funeral services will be conducted at his late residence Friday morning, followed by a requiem mass at St. Martin's Church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be in Rock Creek cemetery. Pallbearers will be Police Capts. Flather, Sullivan, Mulhall, Peck, Williams and Hartley.
