On January 29, 1930, a lovely baby girl, the 5th of 8 children, was born to John and Mary McDaniel. They named her Verta Lee.

She attended school in Eufaula, Oklahoma until middle school and worshipped at Huttonville Baptist Church. Verta Lee moved to Muskogee in the 9th grade, where she attended the historic Manual Training High School. There, she excelled in her studies and was chosen Service Queen. There, she met and later married Marquis Grant. This union was blessed with 9 children.

Mrs. Grant joined Macedonia Baptist Church, declaring her belief in God and Jesus as Lord of her life. She was an active member of Mission Circle #4, served as a BTU teacher, Summer bible school teacher and youth director. She was known at Macedonia as the Candy Lady. For over 50 years she knew and "had on hand" everyone's favorite candy. She was also famous for her sweet potato pie and especially her peach cobbler.

Verta was known to many customers in retail sales and alterations beginning with May Brothers, Lu's Dress shop, Vivian's Apparel and also known as the "Hat Lady" at 'Hunts Department Store for over 20 years. One of her favorite activities other than watching her own children and grand children play sports was watching her favorite teams, the OKC Thunder and Atlanta Braves.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marquis, her son's Marquis III, Paul, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her daughters, Laversia Murray, Muskogee, OK, Idella Teague, Tulsa, OK, Freida (Maurice) Derrick of Marietta, GA; her Sons, Duane Grant, Prague, Ok, Terrell Grant, Claremore, Ok, Alphonso (Denise) Grant, Tulsa Ok, Alonzo Grant, Muskogee, OK; Daughter-in-law, Bettye Grant of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; 2 sisters, Mae Helen Collins and Lee Anna Collins, both of Muskogee, Ok; a caravan of Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and a great- great grand child; a great many nieces and nephews; her Special friends Josephine and Earl Brackeen, and a host of friends and neighbors.
