Bessie M. Shepherd, the youngest of 8 children and a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Hatcher and Nancy Jane Wilson Hatcher, died Thursday, January 12, 1995 in Portland, Oregon. She was formerly of Bethesda, Ohio but had been living with her son Harry Brooks of Portland.

She was born June 03, 1905 in Lampsville, Ohio. Unfortunately, like so many small communities in rural SE Ohio, Lampsville no longer exists, but was located in Goshen Twp in Belmont County, Ohio. She worked as a nurse's aid for a time and was a Methodist. Surviving are her son Harry Brooks; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

"Aunt Bessie" hosted many family reunions at her old, brick farm house in a valley of Chestnut Level with many generations attending each year. The farm encompassed property that sat along Bend Fork so the children had mowed fields of hay to play ball or tag in, and a beautiful, cool creek to swim in during the reunions. These reunions continued until Donald took ill. After his death, Aunt Bessie moved in with her son in Portland, Oregon.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Chester Brooks, and second husband, Donald D. Shepherd; 2 brothers and 5 sisters.

There was no visitation with burial taking place in Ebenezer Cemetery, Bethesda, Ohio. In charge of arrangements was the Wilhelm Funeral Home, Portland, Oregon.
