Susan Alexander Coopman, age 62 passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. She was a resident of Needham.
Susan was born May 20, 1952 in Beech Grove, to the late Melville and Mary (Lee) Alexander.
She graduated from Linden High School in 1970 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Psychology from Purdue University, graduating with honors in 1974. In 1983, Susan graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors from Indiana University with a Master of Science in Social Work, focusing on Family and Children Psychiatric Services. She was a licensed Clinic Social Worker (LCSW) and Board Certified by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). She married the love of her life, John T. Coopman on August 17, 1974 in Lafayette. He lovingly survives after 40 years of marriage.
Susan attended Christ United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. She was employed by the Housing Authority with the State of Indiana and was also the Director of Social Work for Turtle Creek Nursing Homes. Susan was a school based social worker for Spencer Elementary School and Muncie Community School Special Education Cooperative. She was also a school based family and children services social worker for Johnson County Special Education Cooperative until her retirement in 2010.
Susan will be missed by her loving husband: John T., and the children she adored: Jon Tyler Coopman, Fiancé Haley Skaggs, of Austin, TX; Alexa Suzanne Riester, husband Matt, of Columbia, SC; special granddaughter: Alexandra Grace Coopman; sister: Nita Holcomb, husband Ron, of Alpharetta, GA; brother: Greg Alexander, wife Kathy, of Woodstock GA; and nieces: Rachelle Alexander Travis, husband Jeff, Stephanie Alexander Agan, husband Josh, and Holley Alexander Dudley, husband Scott, all of Atlanta, GA.
Susan inherited her love and adept skill of sewing and making high fashion clothing from her mother who was a professional seamstress. She and her sister won the state dress revue several times and she continued sewing and making her own high fashion clothes as an adult. An additional skill and passion was playing the piano. Susan loved to master difficult pieces of music and found great peace and joy sitting at the piano lost in her music. When time was found, she was an awesome cook and loved to find new and different recipes to share with her family. Her recipe box is a treasured keep sake.
Susan was committed to making our world a better place and lived a legacy of service to others. She extended her kind and caring heart to others often, and, at times, as a sacrifice of herself. Her selfless giving was coupled with a strong faith in God and always seeing the good in others. Susan was a very loving and committed wife and mother. Her first priority was her children and some soon found out not to Mess with the Mother Bear's Cubs.
Susan's commitment to our earth was found in a deep love of the outdoors and a kindred spirit with trees and nature. She loved her trees and flowers and took great joy in planting and attending to both. Susan was in awe of nature and took the time to appreciate the work on God's palette. She loved the changing of the seasons and studied weather and what the sky offered in each season. Susan especially loved spring as she appreciated God's wonder of bringing new life to our earth with trees full of buds and flowers bursting forth from the ground.
In her life, her zest for knowledge was never quenched as she was a voracious reader on whatever topic that caught her interest. As time and as technology sped the ability to gain more knowledge, she combined her love of books to the search of the internet that offered volumes of information for her to mull over and think about. She passed her love of learning, curious nature, love of nature and animals, and her kind and caring heart to her children as an everlasting legacy of her life on earth.
In her fight to continue loving life on earth, the family would like to thank the doctors and care givers of the OB-Gynecological Oncology Group of doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospitals, Dr. Marylou Mayer and staff, Hematologist and Oncology, Dr. Danielle Matei and staff, IU Simon Cancer Center, for their tireless fight against Ovarian Cancer. They would also like to thank the many members of Overcoming Ovarian Cancer for their love and support of those afflicted with the dreaded disease.
The Rev. David Lee will conduct a Celebration of Life Service at 4 p.m. Friday, December 12 at the Christ United Methodist Church: 8540 US 31 South in Indianapolis.
