James made and laid the first brick in the town of Crawfordsville,Indiana, 1823. Groves Genealogy in file. Married Mary McCarty in Rush Co., Indiana 6-25-1825. Mary was born 1-20-1805 in Maryland. James surveyed the site for Lafayette, Indiana and helped to clear the ground
the public square now occupies. Served as Adjutant for the Colonel in the 1832 Indian uprising, the Blackhawk War: Indiana Source Book III.
Mary died March 20, 1870 in Thorntown, Indiana of "lung fever" with bur. in Maple Lawn.
Son Robert T. Groves sold land, worked in Cinncinati, Ohio in meat packing. Married Rachel Allen. Several children: James Allen (Civil
War) in Thorntown, Indiana in 1867 (a Mason), and Franklin Ellsworth Groves, Wm. Donovan Groves. Robert T. Groves requested a divorce from Rachel Allen in 1878 and it was granted. He was directed to pay her $400 alimony over 30 months. James was living in Thorntown, Indiana in 1874:Groves Gene.
