Ruth Coats passed away on May 2, 2011. She was born in Logan Utah on August 24, 1914 to Edward G. and Lucy (Barnes) Ball. She moved with her family to Michigan at the age of two. She graduated from Mancelona High School and County Normal and was teaching prior to her 18th birthday. Ruth was ahead of her time with her early interest in flying.

Ruth is survived by six children from her marriage to her former husband Edward D. Chapman; Vern (JoAnne) Chapman of Mancelona, MI, Linda (Roger) Yorde of Ft. Meyers, FL, Ken (Kathy) Chapman of West Branch, MI, Dennis (Lyn) Chapman of Provo UT, Valerie (John) Bachelier of Bakersfield CA and David Chapman of Mojave CA. Also, surviving are 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Graham, Philip and Richard, one half sister Adele and husbands Frank Austin and Walter P. Coats.

Ruth was a lifetime member of the Patrons of Husbandry (Grange), the Order of Eastern Stars and a long time member of the Alden Methodist Church. She was a regular volunteer at the Bellaire Senior Center and MeadowBrook Home and had volunteered with Hospice in Florida.

Ruth was an avid needlework enthusiast, winning first place in several categories at local fairs. If there was a bingo game, Ruth wasn’t far away.

Services to be led by Rev. Daniel Biteman Jr. of Alden Methodist Church at Mortensen Funeral Home, Bellaire Chapel on Monday May 9th at 1:00pm with Interment at the Helena Township Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers donations may be directed to Hospice of Helping Hands in West Branch, MI 4866
