Edward Wyman was a career educator. An 1835 Amherst College graduate, he first taught in grammar schools in Boston, Massachusetts. He established Hillsboro Academy in Hillsboro, Illinois, serving as its principal for eight years. In 1843 in Saint Louis, Missouri, he established a high school and served as its principal for 10 years. On hiatus from education from 1853 to 1861, he was partner in a Saint Louis banking company and agent of the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad. Beginning during the Civil War, he was president of Saint Louis University and then went into the real estate business in 1867. He maintained his interest in education as president of the board of Saint Louis, Missouri public schools. In 1879 he founded and became principal of Wyman Institute in Upper Alton, Illinois. The Wyman Institute was a boarding school. After Wyman's death in 1888, the boarding school continued operation under new ownership as Western Military Academy.
Edward Wyman's first marriage was to Elizabeth Frances, daughter of Moses Hadley of Boston. After Elizabeth's death in 1858, he married Martha, daughter of Dr. Edwin Leigh of Saint Louis, Missouri.
