Sanford Gorham Sr. was born in 1785 in Franklin Co, GA, USA to John Gorham III (1742-1797) and Jennette (Jenny) Jane Williamson (1765-1808).

He married Elizabeth Howard Farrar in Franklin Co, GA, USA on 7 MAY 1807. They had the following children:

Sanford served as a private in the War of 1812 in Capt. Sanbridge's Company of the Georgia Militia. He fought in the battle of Calibee Swamp in Calibee, Macon, AL, US in Jan of 1814. He enlisted on Aug 26, 1813 and was discharged on March 4, 1814.
