Wiley Monroe Craft, died Saturday April 8, 2006. He was 82. He was born May 30, 1923, in Clifton Forge, the son of Lafayette Forrest and Moggie Nicely Craft. He was the third of their five children. During World War II Mr. Craft served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the U. S. Army Air Force, qualified as a navigator/gunner on B-24 bombers. Attached to the 455th Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force near Rome, Lt. Craft took part in raids on northern Italy, southern Germany, Austria and Romania. He earned four battle stars and won an Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster for gallantry in action. Following the war, he earned bachelor's and juris doctor's degrees from the University of South Carolina. While studying in Columbia, he met on a blind date Margie Peak, an office manager for the Tidewater Supply Co. and fellow Carolina graduate. They wed on September 1, 1949. Following a stint as a negotiator with the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D. C. Mr. Craft and his family relocated to Roanoke, where he took a job with State Farm Insurance Co. He was with State Farm for nearly 20 years. Following that, he opened a private practice of law in the city, from which he retired in 1992. For many years Mr. Craft was active in his church Garden City Baptist. He served multiple terms as chairman of its Board of Deacons and for a number of years supervised its Royal Ambassadors, a Baptist outreach program for boys. He also taught an adult Sunday School class and in later years, enjoyed singing in the choir. Surviving Mr. Craft are two sons, Robert L. Craft of Roanoke and Dr. Randy Craft of Mechanicsville. Dr. Craft is a licensed clinical psychologist, employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia. He and his wife Debra, a scientist with the Commonwealth of Virginia, are parents to Mr. Craft's only grandchild, Matthew. Margie Craft, Mr. Craft's wife of 48 years, died in 1997. Also surviving is Lonnie Craft, the last of Mr. Craft's siblings. He is a retired lieutenant from the Virginia State Police and lives in Roanoke with his wife Katherine. Their daughter, Susan C. Martin, Mr. Craft's niece, lives in Salem with her husband Tim and their three sons. Another niece, Sherry S. McClung of Clifton Forge, is employed in Roanoke at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The family requests that well-wishers omit gifts of Flowers and food, instead making memorial contributions to organizations seeking cures for Alzheimer's disease and diabetes, maladies from which Mr. Craft suffered. Funeral services for Mr. Craft will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2006 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with interment to follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 982-2100.
