When he was about a year old he moved, with his parents, to a Tule River Homestead in Tulare Co., California, where he spent his childhood. He married Elma Mae Dingman in Los Angeles in 1892. They settled first, in Newhall, Los Angeles Co. where he owned and operated a General Merchants Store for several years before he went into Insurance and Investments in Los Angeles. They celebrated their 60th anniversary, 20 April 1952.
On 26 Jul 1955, at the age of 85 he passed away.

Funeral service for James Mathias Gulley 85. insurance and investment broker in West Hollywood for 50 years will be conducted today at 3 PM at Ytter-McKinley's Hollywood Chapel. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Mr. Gulley was a native of San Jose, and his grandparents Mathias and Elizabeth Swall were among the earliest West Hollywood pioneers. He resided at 845No. Hillsdale Ave., and retired from active business in 1952. He leaves his widow Elma, a daughter Hazel B Allen, a granddaughter and 3 great granddaughters.
