James Mathias Gulley was born in San Jose to Bryant Gulley and Emma Ann Swall. He was named James, the name of his paternal grandfather and Mathias, the name of his Maternal grandfather.
When he was about a year old he moved, with his parents, to a Tule River Homestead in Tulare Co., California, where he spent his childhood. He married Elma Mae Dingman in Los Angeles in 1892. They settled first, in Newhall, Los Angeles Co. where he owned and operated a General Merchants Store for several years before he went into Insurance and Investments in Los Angeles. They celebrated their 60th anniversary, 20 April 1952.
On 26 Jul 1955, at the age of 85 he passed away.

He resided at 845No. Hillsdale Ave., and retired from active business in 1952. He leaves his widow Elma, a daughter Hazel B Allen, a granddaughter and 3 great granddaughters.
