Roger A. Kubitz, 80, Athens died Thursday, November 6, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield with his family at his side. He was born November 11, 1933 in Wausau, son of the late Martin and Marie (Kroening) Kubitz. Roger was a graduate of the Athens High School. On July 5, 1957 he married Marlene Ohnstad at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. She survives. After high school Roger worked at Marathon Electric in Wausau, owned his own milk route and began to build a mink farm at the age of 22. For more than 46 years Roger and his wife Marlene owned and operated their own mink farm as well as raising ginseng. Roger served on the Athens School Board for several terms, served on the American Mink Council and was very active in local mink rancher organizations. He was a proud leader of the Roger Allen Orchestra from age 17, and also played with the Athens Oldtimers Band. Roger was a member of the Three Bears Hunting Camp and also enjoyed family vacations, hunting, fishing and playing cards. He will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality and the many friends he had made. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marlene Kubitz, Athens, his children, Terry (John) Geurkink, Hudson, Mark (Avis Nagorzanski) Kubitz, Deerfield, three grandchildren, Jack Geurkink and Chase and Tyler Kubitz and one sister, Jean (Arlon) Hopperdietzel, Montgomery, Texas. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Kubitz. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. The Rev. Jeffrey Lambrecht will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, town of Hamburg. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home Athens and again on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Roger's name. Pallbearers for the service will be Chase Kubitz, Tyler Kubitz, Donald Punke , Laverne Henrichs, Marvin Kroening, Dave Weiler and Jack Geurkink.
