She was adopted at age two by her future husband's grandparents, William and Anna Kivett. Mabel adamantly refused to have anything to do with her birth mother or her biological brother or sister. She went by her adopted last name, Kivett, until her marriage.

She and her future husband, Orville, both grew up in Grand River Township (which included Macksburg). While Orville was 7th Day Adventist, she was Baptist. Their children were raised Baptist. Orville and his brother would attend church on Saturdays, and Mabel would take their kids on Sundays.

She played autoharp and sang. She had a good sense of humor and was often the target of jokes perpetrated by her son-in-law, Marion. She did not venture out of her house very much and often suffered with migraines.

"MABEL GRISWOLD Dies At 83 Years

Mrs. Mabel Griswold, a life-long resident of Madison County died Thursday, Dec. 13, at a Winterset nursing home. She was 83 years of age.

Mrs. Griswold was the former Mabel Kivett, daughter of William and Anna Kivett. She was born in this county Oct. 7, 1879. She was married to Orville Griswold Sept. 20, 1899. They spent their active life in farming. Upon their retirement, they moved into Macksburg to make their home. Mr. Griswold preceeded her in death.

She was a member of the Baptist church at Macksburg.

She is survived by four sons, Leonard of Tucson, Ariz., Clarence of Creston, Ralph of Pasadena, Calif., and Carl of Grand Island, Nebr.; three daughters, Mrs. Neil Walter of Lenox, Mrs. Nina McKinzie of Wintersset, Mrs. Pearl Warnoch of Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at Macksburg, and burial was made there.
